Product description
Bacteriostatic water is water with an added preservative – usually 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The additive inhibits the growth of bacteria after the vial has been punctured.
Unlike plain water, an opened vial can therefore be used for several withdrawals. The vial is closed with a septum through which withdrawals are made.
Use in the laboratory
In the laboratory, bacteriostatic water is used as a solvent for lyophilised substances that are withdrawn from the same vial over a longer period.
Whether it suits your experimental setup depends on the substance and protocol – some peptides and cell cultures do not tolerate benzyl alcohol. Your laboratory's SOPs are authoritative.
