What is MT2?

MT2 (Melanotan II) is a synthetic, cyclic heptapeptide. It contains the core region of α-MSH, closed into a ring by a lactam bridge.

The cyclic structure makes the molecule very stable. Like MT1, MT2 was developed at the University of Arizona and is structurally the starting point for PT-141.

MT2 in research

MT2 is a non-selective agonist at the melanocortin receptors MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R. In cell models it is used to study melanogenesis.
